ABSTRACT:
The Kiloword Scripts appeared in the sixth century, and because it is high in moral value, rich in knowledge, full of interest, pleasant in sound and easy to read and remember, it has proved a most popular textbook for children in China ever since.
The author of this paper thinks it incumbent on him to introduce such a rich treasure of Chinese traditional culture to beneit more people in the world.
The original work is very concise, using only 1000 characters of which 994 are not repeated and each rhyming sound is used only once; the translation emulates by using an iambic foot for every character and the rhyming sound always appears new.
Many lines in the original are colloquial in style and simple in language, reading like proverbs; the translation aims to capture this feature.
Some passages in the original appear elegant with a lofty literary lavour, the translation follows in its wake to the best of the renderer's ability.
To make the lines appeal to readers of English, he has tried to exploit the classics in English for embellishment. In addition, Chinese proper nouns which may pose dificulties in pronunciation for non-Chinese readers are arranged in metrically stressed positions so that any obstacles may hopefully be eliminated.

《千字文》是梁朝（502-507）周兴嗣所撰的启蒙学读本。据载，梁武帝萧衍（464- 549）于大同年间（535-546），命殷铁石在王羲之（321-379）书写的碑文中拓下不重 复的一千个字，供皇子们学书；但由于字字孤立，互不联属，甚是难学难记。帝乃召周兴 嗣道：“卿有才思，为我韵之”。周只用了一个晚上就编好呈上，便是传至今日的《千字文》。该文精思巧构，知识丰瞻，音韵谐美，宜于记诵，自此成为流传千古的启蒙学教科 书。《千字文》启迪了世世代代儿童少年，是许多名人大家的起步教材，初行时，尚有其 他几种蒙学读本，但都在排沙简金的历史长河中湮没无闻，惟独此《文》流传不衰。历代 大书法家有很多人用多种字体书写过《千字文》，成为传世名帖，可见《千字文》实在是中华文化的瑰宝。
